About This Image

Size refers to the image that is showing.

This photograph first appeared in a small auction in Paris where initially the photographer and other details were unknown, and the dags could barely be seen under the dirty glass. Paris conservator Jerome Monnier cleaned and resealed the glass on each, leaving everything else intact. It has the beautiful blue color of the first daguerreotypes. The

use of a large plate daguerreotype and the mastery of photographic chemistry are signs of the work of a

professional or a talented amateur. Such expertise could indicate that the photographer came from Paris, where more accomplished practitioners could be found at that period.

Bayard was given a commission from the Duc de Luynes' architect, Jacques Felix Duban, to photograph the Duke'sproperties and restoration work on the famed Chateau deBlois. Included with the landscape plates of the Duke's property was a daguerreotype of Bayard's favorite subject, Georgina Benoist, directly tying these oversized full-plate

daguerreotypes to Bayard for the first time.

Hippolyte Bayard moved to follow the restoration of the Chateau de Blois between 1843 and 1845 at the request of architect Jacques Felix Duban, and to whom this was initially attributed. We would date this daguerreotype in the last year of that range. Bayard is considered one of the founders/discoverers of photography.

The Château de Dampierre is a castle in Dampierre-enYvelines, in the Vallée de Chevreuse, France.

Built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1675–1683 for the duc de Chevreuse, Colbert's son-in-law, it is a French Baroque château of medium size.[1] Protected behind fine wrought iron double gates, the main block (corps de logis) and its outbuildings, linked by balustrades, are ranged symmetrically around a dry paved and gravelled courtyard.

This daguerreotype has had its glass cleaned by Jerome Monnier.

Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
