About This Image

"Photogravure sur Acier par Ch. Negre" stamped on recto margin. From the rare and important project by Duc de Luynes and finished by his son, Voyage d'Exploration a la Mer Morte, 1871-1874, pl. 9.

Vignes accompanied the Duc de Luynes an archaeologist, numismatist and art collector on a trip to Lebanon and Palestine in 1864, despite of, or because of, his passionate amateur status as a photographer. He took calotypes to record key places. Charles Nègre printed them in the early 1870s with his newly discovered heliogravure process.

Sidon (Saïda), 48 kilometers south of Beirut, is one of the most prestigious sites on the Lebanese coast. Its ancient history, however, remains shrouded in mystery, not only for lack of systematic archaeological excavations, but also because its heritage has been partly looted and dispersed by treasure seekers and lovers of art objects from the 19th century, and even from the beginning of the 20th century.
