About This Image

A magnificent plate in nice full leatherette case.

Luther Holman Hale was born in Milbury, MA, on September 21, 1823. His father was a scythe manufacturer, "possessed of ample means, and what is more, a disposition to aid his son in obtaining a good education." Hale entered Hopkinton Academy, where he distinguished himself as being a top student and an excellent chemist. Having completed his studies, he graduated with the highest honors.

After trying several professions, he made up his mind to become a daguerreotypist and worked for a while in his brother's studio in Boston. After leaving his brother's business, he tried his hand at a dry goods store, but left that job to open up his own daguerreotype studio in 1842. His background in chemistry served him well, as he experimented to increase the speed of the process. His work was well thought of by his contemporaries. R.W. Keyes wrote in the 1851 Photographic Art-Journal that "he produced pictures, which for distinctness of feature and outline, brilliancy of color and tone, artistic arrangement and effect, rivaled the finest efforts of the most gifted pencils. Without wishing to detract from the merit of any of Mr. Hale's numerous contemporaries, we may safely say, that his pictures are rarely equaled in all the different features that go to make up a good picture, and, are never excelled."

Holman died in 1885.

There are an in-depth articles on Hale by Ron Polito in the Daguerreian Society’s 2014 Annual.
