Here is what the artist, Joseph Cattoni (born January 2, 1973) says about this image: "Driving around the North Georgia mountains on December 26, 2010. It was the day after a fresh snow provided a rare white Christmas in the deep south. Just as I rounded this bend, it started to squall. There are few things that are quite as peaceful as the giant flakes of a snow squall adding to a fresh blanket covering the earth. It's too treacherous for human activity. Everyone is at home. To be out in it is to be alone, but it's not the dark loneliness that usually comes. It's a peaceful, independent loneliness that is not unlike that of a single, strong tree. It's a loneliness that feels good. It's a loneliness that puts you at peace."
For over 15 years, Cattoni has made a living as an art director to pay the bills and fulfill his obligations. More recently, he has been a photographer to pay his creative spirit and fulfill his soul. Formally educated in art and design, he holds a BFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his images have been featured in a number publications and exhibitions.
While he has carved out a career in applying design to a variety advertising and marketing environments, it is the art of making images that has become a life's work. He says that "it has become the perfect outlet to capture the world, share a vision and fill the desire to create." Using skills rooted in principles of design, his images rely on strong composition and balance to draw the viewer in and keep them in the scene. Whether it be a beautiful landscape or a desolate, abandoned home, his goal when creating images is not only to make a photograph that documents a scene, but to add to it and capture its emotion, its essence, its spirit.
