Upcoming Photography Fairs Put Spotlight on Paris in November
Paris Photo is what this week in November is all about.
Paris Photo is what this week in November is all about.

November is a big month for photography in Paris. Of course, the key event is Paris Photo, which is celebrating its 22nd edition. The show will again be held at the Grand Palais from Friday-Sunday, November 8-11, with a VIP opening on Wednesday, November 7th.

This year Paris Photo features 167 galleries and 31 international publishers in the nave of the Grand Palais; 14 series; large format and installation projects showcased in PRISMES on the upper floor; the Film sector at mk2 Grand Palais; and Curiosa, a new curated sector that will present an in-depth look at a specific topic or theme in photography. This year, Curiosa will question relations to the body and eroticism.

In addition to the galleries and publishers, there is an eclectic artistic program, featuring the mischievous and poetic private collection of Californian Nion McEvoy; the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, encompassing 150 years of photographic history; and the exhibition of Baptiste Rabichon, laureate of the BMW Residency.

Other program events include: the Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards; the Platform conversations and Artist Talks, bringing together renowned figures in the field; numerous artist signature sessions; the winner of the 2018 Carte Blanche Students; and Elles X Paris Photo, an initiative of the French Ministry of Culture and Paris Photo which will honor women artists through a special route highlighting selected artworks at the fair and in institutions throughout Paris.

SMALLER FAIRS WITH DIFFERENT FOCUS

In addition to the major Paris Photo fair, there are several other satellite shows during this week.

For its 7th Parisian edition, fotofever will have an expanded program with 100 exhibitors, representing 2-3 solo shows and 250 French and international contemporary artists. For the 160th anniversary of Franco-Japanese diplomatic relations, this contemporary-focused photography fair will zero in on the Japanese photographic scene and will include ten Japanese galleries, such as Einstein Studio, LibroArte, Gallery Suchi and tezukayama gallery.

This fair will be held at the Carrousel de Louvre from November 9-11, with a special VIP opening on November 8th from 3-10 pm. Free shuttles will be available between the Grand Palais and the Carrousel du Louvre, and Paris Photo Guest and VIP passes will be honored for admission to fotofever.

New this year, fotofever launches its first edition of the Young Talents FotoFever Prize with Dahinden, a springboard offering to three young artists their first exhibition in an international art fair, produced by the printing lab Dahinden.

Fotofever will also feature partner prizes, such as the Objetif Femmes Prize of the FotoMasterclass Prize, with winners presented at fotofever. There are a program of talks and guided tours.

Photo Paris Vintage Fair held this year on Saturday in the Pavillon Wagram.
Photo Paris Vintage Fair held this year on Saturday in the Pavillon Wagram.

Launched last year on a Sunday (but now on Saturday), the Photo Paris Vintage Fair offers more of a focus on vintage photography—both 19th and 20th century than the other two fairs.

This smaller tabletop fair is held one day only on Saturday, November 10th, from 9 am to 4 pm at Pavillon Wagram at 47 Avenue Wagram in Paris' 17th arrondissement, a quick five-minute taxi ride from the Grand Palais. The nearest Metro is Place des Ternes on the Number 2 line.

With 100 tables and 60 international dealers, this little show has become the place to pick up bargains and vintage gems. The material varies greatly, but the best rivals that of dealers in the bigger shows.

Produced by French photo dealer Bruno Tartarin, the show has quickly become one of the events to take in during this busy week.

Of course, there is much more, including museum shows, auctions, dinners, and other special events. It's the best time for photography in Paris.
