DEBORAH BELL LEAVES CHRISTIE'S: Deborah Bell's has resigned as head of Christie’s Photographs Department. She has returned to her former occupation as a private photography dealer and intends to open a public space in New York City. Meanwhile, her former boss at Christie's, Joshua Holdeman, has joined Sotheby’s as Senior Vice President and Vice Chairman, Americas.

BERLANGA EDGES OUT ON HIS OWN: For the last 15 years, Paul Berlanga has been, and remains, director of the Stephen Daiter Gallery. Now, he has also launched Berlanga Fine Art • Photographs in Chicago out of the same gallery space. GETTY ACQUIRES TRESS PHOTO GROUP: The J. Paul Getty Museum has acquired 66 gelatin silver prints by photographer Arthur Tress. The bulk of the acquisition consists of staged images of children from his series The Dream Collector (1972) and Theater of the Mind (1976). They are the first photographs by Tress to enter the Getty’s collection. Tress began his career as a street photographer but eventually became more interested in staged, more theatrical images.

HEITING APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF NEWTON FOUNDATION: June Newton, has appointed collector Manfred Heiting director of the Helmut Newton Foundation. Manfred Heiting will take over the management of the foundation. Since 1975 he built a world-class collection on the history of photography. After transfer of his collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 2002, he focused on his extensive photographic book collection. His library of about 30,000 books will also go--over time--to the MFAH. He is presently building a data base of photographic books from 1885-1980. He was the co-founder of the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (1984); founder of FOAM – Fotomuseum Amsterdam (1999): project director of SPB, to build a National Photographic Center in Berlin (1999 – 2001).

YUKA YAMAJI JOINS PHILLIPS: Phillips has appointed Yuka Yamaji as senior specialist in the London Photographs department. Yamaji has been actively involved in the photography market for over a decade. She launched the Christie’s Los Angeles Photographs department in 2000 and then became head of its London Photographs department in 2004. Yuka Yamaji’s expertise ranges from 19th century to present day photography with special interest in European avant-garde and Japanese photographs. Yamaji holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and French Language & Literature from Smith College and a Master of Arts in Art History from Tufts University.

PIASA OPENS NEW HEADQUARTERS: PIASA auction house has opened a new 1,000 square meter headquarters on Rue du Faubourg St-Honoré, in the heart of Paris’s 'Golden Triangle.' The new address, 118 rue du Faubourg St-Honoré, has been an address frequented by leading collectors, specialists and connoisseurs, because it was the historic home of Galerie Aaron. PIASA has installed its company office there with all the firm's auction departments, including photography. The new venue will allow PIASA to combine its sale room, viewing facilities and offices at the same location.
