About This Image

This has always been thought to be a portrait of Sasha Stone in clown makeup that his wife, Cami, took, but Thomas Friedrich, who is analyzing the archive list of Cami and Sasha Stone, has identified the print as a portrait of Charles Rivel, who was photographed by Sasha Stone.Josep Andreu Lasserre was one of the most famous and popular clowns in then world, known by the artistic name of Charlie Rivel. He had been born in Cubelles in 1898, the son of a circus artist family. His father was a trapeze artist and his mother a funambulist. Rivel did his first performance at two years old. He became internationally known for his imitations of Charlie Chaplin. An important and rare image. With photographer's Berlin and the Scale Theater stamp on verso. "Stone Berlin" is reversed out of the negative.Sasha Stone was born Aleksander Serge Steinsapir in St. Petersburg in 1895 of Jewish parents. In Germany, where Stone became a photographer, he belonged to the circle around the important artistic periodical "G". He lived and worked in Europe and America between the wars and is best known for his portraits, nude studies, photographs of Berlin and for his photojournalism. Both his and his wife Cami's photographs were published in German photography annual Das Deutsche Lichtbild. He and his wife fled Germany in 1932.His nude work appeared in "Les Femmes", which was published by Editions Arts et Metiers Graphiques, Paris, in 1933. His nudes are usually in poses that are quite modernist in sensibility and the lighting emphasizes the sculptural shapes and angles of the women. Stone and his wife Cami moved to Brussels in 1932. The studio was located at 18 rue de Naples until the German invasion of Belgium in 1940. He died that year at the hands of the Nazis.
