Saugrin was an important early French photographer, who worked in daguerreotype, stereos and other media. He exhibited daguerreotypes at the SFP in the 1850s and stereos in 1864. The photograph comes from an album of what may be Saugrin's own home and estate. These fine landscape images (with some people for scale) appear to be from the 1850s or early 1860s. Most of the images appear to be experiments in toning techniques. Often the same image is produced in vastly different tones ranging from deep purple to a yellowish cast. Large format prints by Saugrin are virtually unknown.
