This print came from the photographer's personal album, which had a date range of 1853-1857 on the album itself. Only one other print known in a smaller print.Provenance: Harry Lunn.As well as being an active partner in the family's banking business, Richard Dykes Alexander (1788-1865) became chairman of the Ipswich Dock Commission and a director of Ipswich Water Works.Alexander was also a keen amateur photographer, whose work from the early 1840s through the late 1850s spanned much of the changes in the medium, from daguerreotype to salt and albumen paper prints and stereos. Most of his images focused on portraits and landscapes from around his community.He had family connections to photography pioneers William Henry Fox Talbot and John Dyllwin Llewelyn. He became a member of the Photographic Society in 1853 and he showed eight lots of photographs printed from collodion negatives at their 1858 exhibition held at the South Kensington Museum.A Quaker, a pacifist and involved in the committee of management of the Ipswich Museum in the 1850s, he was deeply concerned for the social as well as spiritual welfare of the working population of the town. He was also active in the temperance movement and was a founder of the Ipswich Ragged School.His grand house was built in the fields to the west of the town on the corner of St Matthews Street and Portman Road, parts of which are still discernible.As a devoted supporter of the abolition of slavery, in the 1850s he made land available for housing near to his home and stipulated that some of the street names should be those of leading abolitionists.His photographs are in several institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
