Christie’s has announced the auction of Collection Roger Therond: Une Passion Francaise, to take place in Paris with two live auctions, Nov. 13 and 14, and an online component closing November 17th. All works will be exhibited from Nov 6 - Nov 13. Heavily featuring incredible 19th-century French photographs, Therond’s collection is a celebration of the first 100 years of photography.
His collection caused a sensation in 1999 when it was exhibited at the Mason Europeenne de la Photographie. The legendary collection has been in limbo since his passing in 2001, and is finally coming to market. It will take place at Christie's Paris in an evening sale Friday, November 13th at 5 pm, and Saturday, November 14th at 2:30 pm. An additional online auction continues through November 17th. All three auctions total more than 350 photographs.
Timed to coincide with the annual gathering of the photography world during Paris Photo in November, this collection sale promises to recalibrate the 19th- and early 20th-century photo markets. Over 350 works spanning the first 100 years of Photography will be on preview exhibition November 6–14.
